Meet Dawson

Dawson, son of Sascha and DJ Burdick, is just 2 months old. He already adores playing with his sisters, who bring out his brightest smiles. His favorite time of day is when his parents gather for story time, filling his world with warmth and wonder. Even at such a young age, Dawson's love for family time is clear, making every moment special.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 2 is a genetic disorder that affects the motor neurons in the spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness and atrophy. Typically diagnosed between 6 and 18 months of age, SMA Type 2 is characterized by the inability to stand or walk independently, though children with this condition can usually sit without support. Caused by a mutation in the SMN1 gene, SMA Type 2 results in insufficient production of survival motor neuron (SMN) protein, crucial for muscle function. Early intervention with therapies and supportive treatments can improve quality of life and mobility. Understanding SMA Type 2 is essential for early diagnosis and management, helping affected children lead more active and fulfilling lives.
